GAS portfolio company Power Roll has opened a pilot solar film manufacturing facility in Jade Business Park in County Durham, North East England. The facility is currently employing 34 people.
Power Roll uses technology based on mircogrooves (similar to holograms) to produce low-cost, lightweight, flexible solar film.
Power Roll's flexible film is designed to facilitate a switch to solar energy in built environments where traditional solar panels might be too heavy or expensive, for example; warehouses and agricultural sheds with weaker roofs, and other applications such as off-grid and on vehicles.
Power Roll CEO Neil Spann was quoted in Renewables Now saying, "Developed in the UK, our unique micro-groove design enables a manufacturing process that uses a roll-to-roll technique similar to many low-cost print processes in use today. We will fully demonstrate our technology at our Durham facility and will partner with large companies in the UK and overseas to globally scale up the solar film manufacturing,"
