The loss of biodiversity as a result of human activity is one of the greatest existential challenges we face. Species are becoming extinct at an alarming rate and creatures which used to be widespread are plummeting in numbers. But biodiversity is difficult to measure, and if you cannot measure it, it is hard to protect it.
Green Angel Syndicate announced today that its members have backed NatureMetrics, a pioneer in sampling, sequencing and analysing Environmental DNA. eDNA is left behind in the environment by the creatures which pass through it – in water, soil, or droppings, for example. NatureMetrics can extract minute quantities of eDNA from samples of water, sediment or soil, and identify the species that are present. This technology can be used to identify protected species, such as great crested newts, damaging invasive species such as zebra mussels, and for Environmental Impact Assessments. EIAs are now mandated for many developments around the globe, but have often been ineffective because of the difficulty of tracking impact using traditional manual techniques. NatureMetrics’ technology has already been used in habitats as diverse as the Peruvian Amazon, Scandinavian lakes, ancient woodland, African jungle, the Arctic Circle and the ocean floor.
Green Angel Syndicate has led a £2.5 million round consisting of 38 individual members, its corporate member Triple Point, investing through its Impact EIS Fund, and a group of individual angels. This is the second round of funding for the company.
CEO Dr Kate Bruce, the internationally renowned eDNA scientist who founded NatureMetrics, said “I am delighted to have Green Angel Syndicate on board as investors. With £2.5 million in the bank we will be able to roll out our technology on an international basis, building on our current customer base of environmental consultancies, large corporations and funders, and NGOs. We will also be able to tap into the sector expertise and the network of contacts that comes with an investment from GAS.”
Simon Acland, GAS Director, who has been Chair of NatureMetrics since his investment in its seed round three years ago, said “I am immensely proud of the achievements of Kat and her team since the company started up three years ago, and I feel privileged to be involved in a business which is becoming both a commercial success and a major force for good in this vital area.”
