We’re Recruiting a Business Development Director

Business Development Director – Job Description

About Green Angel Ventures

Green Angel Ventures is the reference early stage investor for UK climate innovation. We specialise in the fight against climate change. We invest through our funds, and through our syndicate (Green Angel Syndicate). These provide the knowledge and experience needed to add substantial value to emerging climate start-ups

Green Angel Syndicate is one of the largest angel syndicates in the UK. We identify, invest in, and help the growth of companies which have specialist technology or processes which can help limit or reduce the world’s carbon emissions. GAS has recruited around 350 members, and invested in over 40 portfolio companies.

Our Climate Change Fund is an evergreen EIS fund co-investing with our angel investors, utilising their specialist knowledge and expertise in the selection of the best and most impactful early stage investment opportunities. Since inception in 2021, we have successfully raised five rounds of the fund, which we have deployed into 25 investments to date.

Green Angel Ventures is a team of 20 people, and this is an exciting time for us. As well as increasing the number and size of investments into companies fighting climate change, our Climate Change Fund is raising and deploying more money than ever, and we have been awarded substantial government funds to invest, allowing us to make a bigger impact, faster.

All GAV team members work from home – we have no office. Some of our team who are based around London meet up for in-person working fortnightly, and we get all staff together twice a year for a couple of days. This role is home-based but will involve travelling to locations in the UK. Many of our industry or member events are London-based, and it may be an advantage if you live within easy travel of London.

The role

We are creating this new role to focus on selling our Climate Change Fund – our EIS fund investing in UK early stage companies fighting climate change. In its five previous closes, the CCF has raised increasing amounts, with the latest close being 70% higher than the previous highest. We now want to dedicate a standalone role to selling the Climate Change Fund through IFAs, to expand it faster, to provide more impact.

Tasks in this role will include:

  • Working independently or as part of a team
    • Create, expand and maintain a sales pipeline of relevant IFA targets
    • Define the best target segments (small / medium / large; regional; specialists focusing on impact/ESG/sustainable investments; etc.)
    • Make contact and offer to introduce CCF
    • Set up introductory meetings
    • Follow up and maintain positive contacts
    • Push through the IFAs’ due diligence processes – prepare materials to respond to DDQs, proactively seek out feedback
    • Secure conversion/commitment
    • Update activity records, notes on sales opportunities, etc
    • Attend conferences, expos, giving presentations where appropriate, and manning a GAV conference booth
    • Visit sales prospects
    • Get feedback from the market
    • Research competitors
  • Working for the Chief Investment Officer
    • Agree sales targets
    • Update and report on progress
    • Improve messaging and sales offering
    • Support the CIO’s sales efforts for other related Fund(s)
  • Working with the Steering Group
    • Update and report on progress
    • Engage with all parts of the business to improve our overall Fund/other offering(s) and to gather relevant information to optimise the sales process (e.g. specific performance data, D&I data, or relevant case studies, etc.)
  • Working with our wider team
    • Learn about our Climate Change Fund and membership Syndicate
  • Other ad hoc tasks or projects, throughout the business

About you

  • You have proven, successful experience in selling EIS Funds through IFAs and wealth managers
  • You have experience building and managing sales campaigns
  • You have experience in data analysis, reporting and building models and reports in standard spreadsheet tools
  • You are comfortable performing and reporting against sales targets
  • In your application, you will be able to demonstrate your experience in and aptitude for each of the areas in which you’ll be operating, through your education, working experience, and/or voluntary activities.
  • You will be determined to use your skills and background to help GAV to fight climate change. You may have knowledge of and interest in sustainability and climate change.
  • You are highly numerate
  • You have good writing and communication skills. You have fluent written English.
  • You will have represented previous employers well, in high-stakes situations (e.g. conferences, pitches to large IFA networks, etc)
  • You have exceptional attention to detail.
  • You have the confidence to engage with our team and our external partners.
  • You can use your initiative to suggest changes, and to make decisions confidently.
  • You have good common sense, and can identify when ‘something isn’t right’.
  • You are organised, self-motivated and self-directed.
  • You are a trustworthy person who is easily able to keep sensitive information confidential or compartmentalised to the appropriate audience.

Green Angel Ventures is dedicated to encouraging a supportive and inclusive culture amongst our own workforce, our members, and the workforces of our portfolio companies. It is within our interest to promote diversity and eliminate discrimination in the workforce, as this is good practice and is fundamental to our core values.

Our aim is to ensure that all members, employees and job applicants are given equal opportunities. All employees, members and investors will be respected and valued.

  • Green Angel Ventures operates in one of the most exciting and dynamic sectors in the modern economy: the intersection of climate change, technological innovation, and fund management.
  • This is a permanent contract with a competitive base salary, plus a generous uncapped performance-related commission.
  • We operate an auto-enrolment pension scheme (3% employer contribution on base salary, 5% employee) which you may opt out of.
  • We pay a small monthly working-from home allowance, tax free in line with HMRC guidance.
  • You’ll get 25 days holiday per year, plus all bank holidays, and your birthday. Holiday days increase with length of service.
  • We offer paid ‘journey days’ to staff who travel on holiday by train, coach or boat instead of flying.
  • There will be many opportunities for long-term career growth as GAV continues to scale, and expand its operations into areas such as Fund management.
  • Your voice counts. We employ smart people, and we listen to their opinions. You’ll play an active part in our organisation, and in our plans for the future.
  • Work from where you are. We all work remotely, and we use technology to keep in contact. This role may need some time in London, for our members’ and industry events. Our team members based around London tend to get together approximately each fortnight, when we rent some WeWork space.
